New Toon: The Addict & the Enabler

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 by Mikhaela Reid

I have nothing against Nancy Pelosi, but I totally disagree with her decision to push through that “anti-war” war funding bill. Congress has the power to stop this war right now if it wants to by refusing to fund it. It’s nice that the spending bill includes a pullout date, but the pullout date is in September 2008, more than a year away. How many more Americans and Iraqis will be dead by then? How many more billions will we have spent on an unjust and evil war–billions that could have gone to education, health care, social services, fighting poverty, battling AIDS, you name it… ? Why are the supposedly anti-war Democrats giving Bush even that much more time to mess up Iraq, now that they finally admit how wrong this whole mess has been? All of this seems to be wrapped up in the idea that sending more troops to die is the best way to support the troops. If you believe the war is wrong, that makes no sense. Refusing to fund the war isn’t refusing to support the troops–a bill could be written that would fund only a pullout, no?

P.S. I know, I know. I realize I’m just angry and griping and idealistic, and Pelosi is just doing what she has to do, and they’re aren’t enough votes for an earlier pullout and Bush is most likely going to veto this thing anyway. But I’m still frustrated with the entire Congress–the vast majority of Americans have been against the war for some time now, but instead of a pullout all we’ve gotten is a surge.

The mustard seeds are drying. I like their taste, a few at a time from the pods. Most are saved for replanting though, for the greens.

“The theater crowd”

Seriously. He actually complained about this.

Look, regardless of political stripes, can it at least be accepted that almost since September 11, 2001, George W. Bush has been a living, breathing photo-op? For Bush to complain that his opponents are engaging in “political theater” is like… wow. I’m having trouble thinking of an analogy here.

Okay, imagine Mr. T. He’s standing atop a pile- no, a hill- consisting of every single fool he has pitied in his entire life. They’re all just there. A big pyramid of fools, all of whom were pitied by Mr. T. And standing atop the fool pyramid is Mr. T himself, looking down on you. And he says but one thing, and that is how upset he is with you for pitying fools.

And that’s what it’s like with President Bush to say that he dislikes political theater. And you’re just standing there, thinking just what you would think with Mr. T on the fool pile: Man, that guy’s career has really hit the shitter, hasn’t it?

Please buy some crap.

Snapshot from Cartooning Workshop

Here’s a photo of me discussing the finer points of drawing Spongebob Squarepants at the kids’ cartooning workshop I taught last week. I’ve taught these a few times in the past, and I felt this one went particularly well. I actually had kids hugging me at the end! And no one raised any awkward questions about last week’s cartoon. To be honest, I’m not sure that many of them were familiar with Slowpoke.

This is the rose bush I look at when I sit on the back porch. It’s never looked more spectacular.

The variety is Louis Phillipe. It smells wonderful and blooms a lot, likes the subtropical climate and doesn’t easily get black spot.

plant sex

Here’s a small tangelo tree, flowering for the first time. Those white blobs in the sunlight are flower buds!!!

And here’s a blueberry plant that died, came back, and now has buds on it too!! It’s the first time flowering for this plant as well. I’m very excited. Probably not as excited as they are, though.
