Wow

Thursday, April 26th, 2007 by August J. Pollak

It’s only 7:30 and I’m already torn over what’s the most disturbing thing I’ve seen this morning:

1. Michelle Malkin offers a “commentary” on Democrats by dressing up as a schoolgirl and jumping up and down on video for her viewers; or
2. Chris Muir offers a “commentary” on Hillary Clinton’s politiking by drawing her in blackface.

Only one cartoon this week. I’ve been busy working on a few different comics for magazines and getting multiple major projects lined up. Can’t talk about them yet, but soon…

New Toons: Abstinence Education, Shock Prez + Apocalypse Bob

Thursday, April 26th, 2007 by Mikhaela Reid

A new federal study shows that abstinence education has no effect whatsoever on delaying sexual activity. Shocking!

Also, there really is a (comedy) movie called Killer Condom: The Rubber That Rubs You Out, though I haven’t seen it myself.

OK, so maybe New York charging cars $8 to cut down on pollution and traffic and improve public transport won’t stave off environmental apocalypse, but it’s a start. (Personally, I’d rather see NO personal cars in the city—maybe then I’d be brave enough to take my bike into Manhattan!).

A sequel to 2005’s “Sick Confessions of a Serial Bomber!” I did it before I went away on vacation, and it already feels pretty dated. Ah well.

P.S. Join my weekly mailing list by sending a blank message to newtoons-subscribe@mikhaela.net!

P.P.S. My first book collection, Attack of the 50-Foot Mikhaela!, goes on sale in just a few short weeks!

More on Rove, various scandals…

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 by Abell Smith

Some articles that inspired Rove Ninja:

  • On Rove’s role in the email scandal, check out Dan Eggen, Michael Abramowitz, Daniel Schulman, and Michael Isikoff. As you probably know, Rove’s “role” was pretty cut-and-dried: he intentionally deleted about four years’ worth of emails, probably containing information on his role in such schemes as the outing of an undercover CIA agent and the firing of U.S. attorneys for political reasons. Apparently, he was using an RNC email system to evade legal requirements for document retention and to avoid having to turn the material over to Congress. Rove’s deleting got so out of hand during the Plame investigation that the RNC had to take away his “erasing privileges”… after which, they probably made him stay after class for a half-hour to clean the blackboards.

Patrick Martin also suggests that the White House is preparing to sacrifice Alberto in order to save Rove’s ninja ass. Any day now… maybe…

  • Can you spot all the contemporary movie references in this week’s ‘toon? Rove’s teacher, of course, was based on Pai Mei from Kill Bill. I also just re-watched Batman Begins the other night… so that’s in there. I think there’s a Spiderman reference or two in there, too…

These really are the stupidest people on earth

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 by August J. Pollak

Shorter RedState: Bush visiting troops will make an excellent political backdrop for a statement about how Democrats are using troops as a political backdrop.

They really can’t even hear themselves as they talk, can they?

Review copies of Attack of the 50-Foot Mikhaela now available! + tentative release date

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 by Mikhaela Reid

So the tentative official release date for Attack of the 50-Foot Mikhaela: Cartoons By Mikhaela Reid (i.e. the day you’ll be able to start ordering it on this here fine web site) is May 11. It may be sooner, it may be later! But I’m going to need some serious help promoting this thing, for several reasons:

  • Although it will have a real ISBN and all that, it’s self-published, and I’ll primarily be selling it through Lulu.com and this website.
  • I’m not sure yet if I can actually afford to sell it on Amazon.com, since they charge a whopping 55% commission fee, which would basically mean I was paying them several dollars per copy.
  • HOWEVER, if there’s enough interest in the book, I can print enough copies to sell it through Amazon and still make a tiny bit of $$ per book. So we’ll see!
  • I don’t have a distributor, and I’m quite nervous about trying to distribute it to actual stores, since that could mean returned and unsold copies I have to refund.
  • But I do have tons of postcards I printed up, and I do plan to see if I can get the book into niche/specialty stores–queer/feminist/leftwing and suchlike bookstores would be good. If you know of any good ones, drop me a line! (cartoons@mikhaela.net)

Anyway, if you could do any of the following, my eternal gratitude is yours:

  • Since I’m primarily selling it through the web, I’m particularly interested in sending review copies to blogs with lots of devoted readers who would be amenable to its contents. If you believe you fit this category, please drop me an e-mail (cartoons@mikhaela.net).

  • But of course I would still love to be reviewed in print! So the above applies to print journalists/outlets as well!
  • I would also LOVE love LOVE to do interviews with any blogs or online outlets (and print or radio outlets, of course). So let your writer/blogger/radio friends know!
  • I’m nervous about trying to set up any solo events or signings, but I may try to set up some type of joint events or slideshows of some kind with Masheka and maybe other CWA members. Events at nearbyish colleges, bookstores, etc. I’d love to speak to any Gay/Straight Alliances in high schools (or colleges), too. I’m also happy to do entertaining digital cartoon slideshows in the New York/Massachusetts/Connecticut/Philadelphia type area (basically, anywhere I can reach by bus).

So yes… please help an angry cartoonist out! I’ll have postcards, web ads, promo materials and emails and other tools that should make it reasonably easy for anyone who wants to help!

*EXTRA!! EXTRA!! I’ll be sharing a sliver of a tab…

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 by Keef

*EXTRA!! EXTRA!!
I’ll be sharing a sliver of a table at the Los Angeles Times Book Festival at UCLA THIS WEEKEND. Look for me at the Mc Sweeney’s table and pick up my new (th)ink collection, “Are We Feeling Safer Yet?”

*APE 2007 WRAP-UP..

Another fine APE has come and gone. This one was special because it was the first one since moving down to Los Angeles…

*THURSDAY: The first night up, Kerstin and I stayed at the City Center Hostel on Ellis and Larkin Streets, courtesy of my olde co-worker, Greg. It’s a great hostel, although not the greatest part of town. But if you’ve lived in any sort of big city situation, you’d be used to it.

We heard that Aaron McGruder was being interviewed by my man Jeff Chang at the Jewish Community Center in town. We whizzed on over there after meeting up with New York cartoonists Mikhaela Reid and Masheka Wood at Mark Fiore’s Third Thursdays gathering at Dave’s, a dive bar downtown.

The interview was cool. And the great Morrie Turner, the first black nationally syndicated cartoonist (”Wee Pals”), was in the audience. It was the first time I’d seen him since he had a bit of a medical scare a coupla months ago. We took some nice pix and went out to dinner after.

*FRIDAY: The annual Last Gasp/APE Pre-Reg party was fine and dandy with many of the usual suspects. Plus plenty of good food. It was here where we hooked up with Steve Notley, who was down from Seattle, and Shannon Wheeler, down from Portland. We split the party and joined the rest of our Cartoonists With Attitude colleagues at Daves.

*SATURDAY: The Alternative Press Expo officially begins! I did a panel on socially relevant comics with folks like Paige Braddock and Abby Denson. It was jolly good and well received. A lotta folks came by the table after. Good stuff.

*That evening, Kerstin and I had a great dinner with Rod Gilchrist, director of the Cartoon Art Museum, and his lovely wife. We were prepared for a night of revelry, with an infinite amount of parties and openings to attend..

..but we just decided to go back to where we were staying and get a good night’s sleep.

*SUNDAY: The second day was actually busier than the first day. I was quite surprised and damned pleased. After we wrapped it up, Kerstin, Notley and I went to Tommy’s Joynt for our annual Hofbrau type meal.

*I didn’t pick up much at the event (i gots ta make $$$!!), but I did see this really incredible prototype of a book from Chris Lanier. Chris is a great cartoonist/animator /journalist who served on the board of the Cartoon Art Museum with me. And he did this great interview with me.

*Also, my man Paul Madonna has the first collection of his All Over Coffee. I saw a prototype of the book and it looks beautiful.

*EMAIL OF THE WEEK..

Dear Keith:
I really liked your comic on Jackie Robinson today. I
thought it was the best commentary I’ve heard in all the hubbub about
the landmark. It’s funny that there was so much commotion about him on
his 60th anniversary of breaking the “color barrier” in baseball. You’d
think it would have been a bigger deal on the 50th. Anyway, he was
really before my time (I was born in 1950). I was a Pirates fan because
my father was from Pittsburgh, and so my guy was always Roberto Clemente
(still is). The best highlight from his career, for me, was when he was
named MVP of the 1971 World Series, and the reporter interviewed him.
Even though he could speak English well, he chose to respond in Spanish,
and he gave a little speech about how proud he was to be from the
Caribbean and representing Hispanic ballplayers. A very cool moment
from a real saint of a guy. Hope all is well.

Home run

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007 by August J. Pollak

This needs to be repeated after every faux-Libertarian rant about smoking bans, fast food regulation, helmet laws, and so on ad nauseum [emphasis mine]:

This clearly expresses a fundamental tenet of conservative/libertarian thinking: that engaging in risky behavior with serious social costs is an entitlement. People who are injured by metal bats, or fall ill from smoking or fatty food, cost the rest of us money. We pay their emergency room bill, their Medicare bills or their Social Security disablity insurance. Only someone willing to forgo those benefits should have the right to also opt out of public health laws like those passed by the New York City Council, or pre-existing ones requiring that motorcyclists wear helmets and drivers wear seat belts. But Beston, like all conservatives, makes no serious suggestion about offering such an option in our society (much less explaining how it would be practically possible.) Instead he merely sneers at the New York City government’s efforts to lower the costs that he, like all other taxpayers, will ultimately bear[.]

As I’ve mentioned before in conversations about “South Park Republicanism,” Libertarian logic is our nation’s epitome of selfishness. I’ll clarfiy Ben’s statement just a little: when boiled down to a single line, the true fundamental tenet of big-L Libertarianism is being inconsolably outraged over any instance, no matter how small, of being told you personally can’t do something, no matter how it affects anyone else on the face of the planet. It doesn’t actually matter if you want to smoke in a restaurant or play with a metal bat or draw a racist cartoon of the Prophet Muhammed, it just matters that someone said you can’t, or in most cases merely shouldn’t, and well that’s just too much for someone as enlightened as themselves to bear.

Why won’t liberals let us plant mines on the playground?

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007 by August J. Pollak

A fourth-grader brought a grenade to school today. This is, of course, the liberal media culture’s fault. I expect the editorials from the National Review any minute now chastizing local security for not shooting the child on sight immediately.

Of course, we also know this is just a sign of how the fragmentary-explosive-hating liberal agenda threatens our children. We need legislation allowing elementary school teachers to carry grenade launchers immediately to prevent potential disasters like this.
