cosmic monkey

The Stumptown Fest was great and there’s still tomorrow. Thank God [info]never_here is going to help me in the morning and [info]baisez_moi_svp in the afternoon. I think I’m going to put out the $10 original art pile for sale tomorrow too. And if I’m not mistaken [info]baisez_moi_svp has offered to kiss customers or somthing…

The Peter Bagge panel is set for noon, or two or something…. I need to figure that out.

Indy, the main guy behind the Stumptown Fest looks out over the crowd at the Cosmic Monkey comic shop where we did the Trophy Awards. There was a lot that could have been done to make it better (like projecting an image of each book as the nominee was mentioned… and making sure there was someone there to receive the award… and I was pissed that we didn’t have a table at the con dedicated to the nominated books… as we’d planned). Still, we did pretty good for a first time award thing. People had a good time. I’d give us a solid B+. The art battle was a hoot too. The whole thing was a blast.

Whew. The first day at Stumptown kicked ass. I was at my table very very little. At 3pm we did an Opera panel which went very well even though the pianist was sick and couldn’t come. Great crowds. Very impressive.

award

I’m getting ready to etch the winners of the First Annual Stumptown Trophy Awards into the statues. We’ll be giving them away around 8. I tied for the D.I.Y. award. I’m still not sure how we’re going to figure that one out.

Old Red Sox

Don’t fuck this up Red Sox. The last month should’ve been a rout, but I’ll take whats I can gets. So who wants to give (or sell at face value) a grumpy cartoonist a ticket to a game?

Since BFW also runs in the Cleveland Free Times, I hope I get the chance to do something with these two cities for the ALCS.

Linguistic Sidebar: I discovered today that it’s impossible to say Jack-O-Lantern without your latent Boston accent popping up. I say this as someone who had his thick Brockton-borne accent laughed out of him at Hopkins.

What’s Happenin’ Now?

Friday, September 28th, 2007 by Masheka Wood

Soooo, am I embarrassed that my last post was in June and my last NJKD cartoon was, um, God knows when? (October, by the way).

The answer is “slightly embarrased. But I had all of this other stuff on my plate like:

1) I married my sweetie, cartoonist Mikhaela Reid, in a kick-ass ceremony in Lowell, MA officiated by Ted Rall, decorated by my cool new mom-in-law Beryl, catered by my new chef-in-law cousin Kevin.

And to everyone who has been wondering: Mikhaela is still “Mikhaela Reid”. She would have betrayed her feminist ideals and whatnot if she didn’t keep her name (besides, she likes it). And as a manimist, I refused to change my surname (though I would have been open to Brangelina-esque monikers for both of us, like “Mikheeka Weid” or “Mashaela Rood”).

2) James Vincent Howell, Sr., my grandfather, passed away on September 10th. He was too sick to see his first grandson get married in person. However, thanks to video (courtesy of my friend Lorraine) and a laptop, he saw the next best thing before he passed. He taught me penmanship, the importance of lettering, and how to ride a bike. Grampa, I’ll miss the way you used to tease me about that picture of my bare ass on a bearskin rug.

3) I have a regular comic in the hot new bi-monthly magazine UVC: The Urban Voice of Comics). Check out the September/October issue for my cartoon ‘Urban Superpowers I Wish I Had’.

So go to your local comic book store (or record store or urban lifestyle store) and pick up a copy. And if they don’t have any, throw a tantrum until they get more. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Stop reading this sentence and go already! Sheesh!

4) Oh waitaminnit! One more thing, y’all. Tonight, tonight!!

I still need more questions/ideas/direction for my Peter Bagge panel.

I started drinking Bailey’s earlier this eve… I’ve moved on to very tasty white russians. All the while I’m writing and drawing daily strips for my not-much-talked-about potential daily strip that I’m pitching soon. My recent strips are very much in the direction I want to take. I want to do something surreal yet grounded. We’ll see if I can pull it off. I’ll try and scan the roughs in the next few days.

I’m pretty determined to give my 30 day notice tomorrow on my current house even though that will only give me 2 theoretical weeks in which to move. I don’t have the keys to my potential new house. We’re supposed to close on the 15th. Sheesh. What a stressful leap into the unknown. I’d be fine if it weren’t for all the crap that I’ve attached myself to. By crap I mean all the stupid stuff that I own.

Posted by Mikhaela Reid

If you’re not lucky enough to be at Stumptown in Portland this weekend with Ted and most of the Cartoonists With Attitude, a few of us (as in two: Mikhaela Reid and Masheka Wood) are doing a cartoon slideshow and book signing in Boston (CWAer Brian McFadden will be attending):

  • What: Slideshow/signing/discussion for Attack of the 50-Foot Mikhaela!: Cartoons by Mikhaela Reid w/ a foreword by Ted Rall and Deep Doodle: Cartoons by Masheka Wood!
  • When: Friday Sept. 28, 7 p.m.
  • Where: Center for New Words, 7 Temple Street, Cambridge, Mass.

“Mikhaela Reid’s cartoons are right *$%@ing on.”

“Masheka Wood has powers way beyond mortal cartoonists. Get on his bandwagon now before there’s no room left!”

– Keith Knight, creator of The K Chronicles and th(ink)

Bushies are bum-rushing Cheney’s secret bunker! “Ex-gays” are quaking in their closets! Abstinence educators are shivering in their shiny silver purity rings! Greedy CEOs are heading for the hills! Brooklyn-based cartoonists Mikhaela Reid and Masheka Wood are on a rampage—and no hypocrite is safe! Slideshow, discussion & signing.
