*EMAIL/LETTERS OF THE WEEK…

re: Star Wars strip-

(Holding up a beer) Here’s to you, guy.

That was one of the funner bits I’ve seen in a while. (Especially the
gentle kick-in-the-knee to the one guy in Hollywood who would laugh with
you, which would be Kevin Smith.)
I assume you’ve avoided the new cartoon movie, too.

My younger daughter turned 16 yesterday; my older daughter is leaving home
day-after-tomorrow. We’ve been in a record heat wave. I shopped ahead. I started
baking before the heat of the day. Two layers, each sliced in two, filled, frosted and
chilled in a struggling dripping fridge. It is time to celebrate. I remember:
Candles!@#$? I look in the cupboard… and find two new packages, untouched, pearly
white, two packs of eight!

Keith, I’m sure you can reduce this to something universal. In case it is not clear,
I’ll tell you that yesterday this seemed a MAJOR victory! Thank you for your work, your
art, your expression of our fears and reminder of our joys.

Hey Keith, I’ve been meaning to drop you a line for a while now. my
girlfriend (now wife) bought me one of your books 3 years ago and I’ve
been hooked ever since. she’s from san fran I’m from utah we met in
new england and are now living in DC. we got a lot of strange looks as
an interracial couple but now that we’re married, people actually
look at us and smile. love the strip, I have them all now and love the
band. anything new on the horizon?

at a recent game with a topic of famous people i tried
to depict you, unsuccessfully. The new in-laws said it wasn’t fair
because you weren’t famous . I beg to differ, in my world your very
famous. keep up the good work and if your ever in DC look me up.

Hey Keith,

I am one of those old comic strip lovers. I have every
Trudeau/Doonesbury book and a hundred more from people like Addams and
Bizarro. I find the humor lifts the day and like your stuff gets me to
laugh and think at the same time but not necessarily in that order.

What got me to write was the “Hi-lingual” strip. As the T&D director of
a truly multi-national company and having to deal with the world
population every day, I love that strip and would love to share it with
some of my colleagues.

Should you find yourself in the Seattle area and need a tour guide, me
and the Mrs. would love to play host but in the meantime, keep on
cranking out the good stuff and hope the Seattle PI will keep your strip
running.

Cheers,

L.

And a video of the week.

Head Scratcher

Friday, August 29th, 2008 by Matt Bors

This is yesterday’s cartoon from Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Ramirez.

Hillary is taking the “I” and “Y” in “Unity” to build “Hillary.” But why is there a giant red “H_LLAR_” right next to it? Where did those letters come from? There’s also the problem of it not even remotely representing what Hillary did at the DNC Convention.

Random Impressions: Obama Speech, DNC, Sarah Palin

Friday, August 29th, 2008 by Kevin Moore

Firstly, I thought Obama’s speech was just dandy. John Dickerson sums it up nicely, while his Slate buddy Mickey Kaus seems to have watched a different speech than I did. Obama would have been criticized for not offering the “laundry list” of plans had he stayed on the “soaring rhetoric” plane; if anything, had he done as Kaus expected, the venue — a stadium packed with Obama-worshippers tearing up and even proposing to each other — would have underscored the criticism that Obama makes great speeches but offers no substance. Within the constraints of political speech-making, Obama countered that charge with a hefty serving of “meat and potatoes.” I still don’t see how a “line-by-line” scrutiny of the federal budget to eliminate waste will pay for all the things Obama said he wants to do, but I imagine it might be a tad more fiscally responsible than, say, waging unnecessary wars. Just sayin’.

Other than oblique references from Gov. Bill Richardson and Sen. Joe Biden to “upholding the Constitution — and actually doing it!”, I agree with Glenn Greenwald:

First, there is almost no mention of, let alone focus on, the sheer radicalism and extremism of the last eight years. During that time, our Government has systematically tortured people using sadistic techniques ordered by the White House; illegally and secretly spied on its own citizens; broken more laws than can be counted based on the twisted theory that the President has that power; asserted the authority to arrest and detain even U.S. citizens on U.S. soil and hold them for years without charges; abolished habeas corpus; created secret prisons in Eastern Europe and a black hole of lawlessness in Guantanamo; and explicitly abandoned and destroyed virtually every political value the U.S. has long claimed to embrace.

Other than a fleeting reference to such matters by John Kerry in a (surprisingly effective) speech which most networks did not broadcast, one would not know, listening to the Democratic Convention, that any of those things have happened. Even our unprovoked and indescribably destructive attack on Iraq, based on purely false pretenses, has received little attention. Those things simply don’t exist, even as part of the itemized laundry list of Democratic grievances about the Bush administration. The overriding impression one has is that the only things really wrong during the last eight years in this country are that gas prices are high and not everyone has health insurance. Those are obviously very significant problems, but they are garden-variety political issues which don’t begin to capture the extremism that has predominated in this country under GOP rule, and don’t remotely approach conveying the crises on numerous fronts the country faces.

Perhaps it is because too many Democrats have been complicit and carrying the water for this administration. Again…just sayin’.

As for Gov. Sarah Palin? I’m with August.

Palin

Friday, August 29th, 2008 by Matt Bors

A disappointing choice from McCain. I was looking forward to drawing Romney again.

The only worthwhile criticism they have of Obama is that he doesn’t have enough foreign policy experience. (John McCain, you may have heard, lived for some time overseas.) Are we to believe Palin has more experience than Obama and is ready to face down Ahmadinejad?

Here are some covers I drew for the Anchorage Press around the time Palin was taking the Governor’s office there.

I believe in miracles

Friday, August 29th, 2008 by August J. Pollak

I have refused to believe for quite some time now that the McCain campaign would be generous enough to actually consider Sarah Palin as his running mate, and now everyone’s going insane suggesting it might really be her.

Palin is governor of a state with a smaller population than Barack Obama’s state senate district in Illinois. She has served less than half a term, her largest elected role before that being mayor of a town of 3,000 people. She’s currently being investigated for abusing the power of her office. And this is the person who’s going to be projected as ready to lead the United States if a 72-year-old McCain keels over? Alrighty then.

Palin eliminates the greatest talking point the GOP has over Obama- that he’s not experienced enough to be president- and suggests that their plan will be pulling in disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters. Which is really a stunning example of how the Republican Party has no understanding of women whatsoever. I’m sure a few Hillary supporters remain upset that their choice didn’t make a ticket, but I don’t think McCain picking a younger, prettier, but immensly less-qualified woman to get the promotion Hillary didn’t is really going to be a choice move for middle-age female voters.

*LOOKING FOR SF FOLKS TO POST FLIERS..
I’ve got posters for my three events happening in San Francisco in September. I need some good folk to post some around town. If you’re into it, send me your address (keef@kchronicles.com), and I’ll mail these suckas out to you.

*EXTRA!! EXTRA!! ADDITIONAL EVENT IN SAN FRANCISCO!!
I just found out that the hostel organization that I used to work for is having their own Keith Knight Hostel Comic Art Exhibition!!

If you’ve been reading the K Chronicles over the years, you know that I used to work at a San Francisco Youth Hostel. I’ve drawn more than a few strips about my adventures there.

Now my old co-worker, Greg H., has organized an exhibit in my honor!! Nice!!

The opening is happening on Saturday, sEpt. 20th, from 7pm-9pm. There’ll be wine and cheese and moi (and a lot of confused hostellers).

The hostel is located at 685 Ellis St. near Larkin. (note: this is one of the sister hostels to the one I used to work at).

*THE BEST THING I GOT FROM THE SAN DIEGO COMIC CON..
..was a comic book called “Pug Davis”, by Rebecca Davis. It’s about a guy who was a janitor, but now has a giant dog head and flies around the universe kicking ass with his homosexual sidekick. Nutty stuff. Check out Rebecca’s website at www.sugarboukas.com.

And, of course, the new Bob the Angry Flower Book.
