“Comic Riffs” blogger Michael Cavna asked several cartoonists their thoughts on the new Apple tablet. You can read my response here. Also, my name suggestion for the tablet can be found here.

I Thought You Would be Funnier pre-orders, Dark Horse, Bone

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 by Shannon Wheeler

The collection of cartoons BOOM! Town…
It’s coming together well – this little book.

I think people can start ordering it. It’s not in Amazon yet but comic shops can pre-order it.

I still don’t know if I can call myself (legally) a New Yorker Cartoonist. They bought 5 cartoons of mine last year – I still feel very much on the edge of that scene.

Chatted with Mike Richardson, publisher of Dark Horse. He’s wanting me to do new Too Much Coffee Man. Very cool! It’s intimidating to chat with Mike – everything is casual and friendly but I know there’s a lot going on in his head. Anyone who has steered a company, published great books, survived, has my respect. And he’s always treated me well. When I talk to someone I genuinely respect I get tongue tied and weird.

Speaking of respect. I just saw that I got a ‘thanks’ in the back of Bone. That book has been on my shelf for years and I’ve read it several times. I’d never bothered to read the acknowledgments. Wow.
I got thanked in Bone. I just read that. Crazy. Jeff Smith is cool.

*THANKS TO EVERYONE..
..who came by the Los Angeles Anarchist Book Fair over the weekend. It was great to reconnect with so many folk who I had met in the Bay Area. Plus all the new people I met including Aaron, the kid selling classic vinyl, to Terry, the Critical Resistance Superhero–and all folks in between.

I’m looking to head to the Bay Area around the 22nd of Feb., so if there are any tasty events going on, let me know.

*LETTERS/EMAILS OF THE WEEK…

Hi Keith,

Now, You don’t know me so you can stop wracking your brain trying to come up
with a face to a name… I was a Freshman at SSC in 1989 when we protested
at the state capital for the tuition increases and were reprimanded for
stomping on the flowers. Now, is there a snowball’s chance in hell that
there is a print of the strip you did for the t-shirts that has survived
these 20 years?

(Still) love reading the K Chronicles!

Best wishes,

j.

(wow!! talk about a blast from the past!! and i just attended an s.s.c alumni dinner in
long beach for those of us who escaped new england!!-kk)

Hey Keith,

I get “Funny Times” and just wanted to let you know that I am always amazed at how many things hit home daily that you have in the “(K)chronicles, etc…)”. I grew up in Jersey but now I’m in teeny Peterborough, N.H….still your stuff hits home, I mention the “Honey is the only food that doesn’t go bad” thing and all that. I know folks send in things that they experience but I can’t right now…one too many new beer samples. Just wanted to say “hi” and we appreciate your humor in Peteborough, N.H.

Take care,

D.

Hello Keith,

I’m Chris and I have been reading your strip for years. I first found it in
our local weekly rag and always make a point every week to find a copy. It’s
really the only redeeming quality of the thing, and never fails to bust me
up. Very funny stuff man. Very smart clever and quick. So I’ve done a little
online searchin’ and would like to get a copy of your book. Also, do you, or
the Marginal Prophets, ever make it to SLC? We’re not quite the cultural
wasteland most perceive us to be, but I don’t know if you’re ever out this
way. Would love to catch a performance…

Anyhoo, look forward to more from you and hope the new year is treating you
well.

C.

(ahh–who knows when the prophets will perform again..i would love to–but i’m 300 miles away from my band!!-kk)

Hey K:

I’ve been reading your article monthly in FUNNY TIMES for maybe 8 years now (guessing). It’s my favorite thing in there. Every issue I think I’m going to write you and tell you. Well I finally did. Thanks for the cool strip and keep up the good work!!! You know I feel like they were all written about me and my experiences. But I bet everyone says that, don’t they?

Where can I get more of your stuff? Do you really have books out now? I live in backward Oklahoma and we don’t have anything near as cool as this in our newspapers comic strips. And can I get something daily or weekly online. I just got to your website and haven’t looked at it yet.

Again, thanx for the fun and games
a K Chronicles fan
B.

(wow..new hampshire, utah and oklahoma!! mebbe i should run for president!!
you can score mosta my stuff from the website store, but expect a lot more to come as far
as product goes, later this year!!-kk)

Keef,

I recently received a forgotten rebate from some software that I bought online. So I
figured that in the spirit of the film, ‘Pay it Forward’ I’d pass the PayPal funds on to
your tip jar.

If I understand the premise of the movie correctly this means I’m entitled to make out
with Helen Hunt sometime soon… but I may have missed the point.

Happy New Year anyway.

- R.

(you the man, r. helen hunt is on her way…-kk)

Obama will say “jobs” a lot.

The Corporate Civil Rights Movement

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 by Matt Bors

“Of the people, by the people, for the people” sure makes more sense now that corporations are considered people. They actually have been for quite some time, but the latest Supreme Court ruling has fully converted our elections into auctions. Remember when a doe-eyed John Roberts said he only wanted to call balls and strikes? He was so cute!

So is this the death knell of Democracy or simply an admission of what’s been happening for quite a while now? Time will tell, but on Democracy Now! last Friday, Jamin Raskin, a Professor of Constitutional Law at American University and a Maryland State Senator, threw out some frightening numbers:

I looked at just one corporation, Exxon Mobil, which is the biggest corporation in America. In 2008, they posted profits of $85 billion. And so, if they decided to spend, say, a modest ten percent of their profits in one year, $8.5 billion, that would be three times more than the Obama campaign, the McCain campaign and every candidate for House and Senate in the country spent in 2008. That’s one corporation. So think about the Fortune 500.

This Week’s Cartoon: “The Vicious Circle of Stupidity”

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 by Jen Sorensen

As you might have noticed, I poached this from my earlier blog post. A number of people were linking to it (thanks!), so I figured I may as well turn it into a cartoon. Instead of using “Republicans” and “Democrats,” I decided to use the symbolic “Party A” and “Party B” to make it more of a parable.

To add to what I said earlier, isn’t it remarkable how the same administration could be perceived as flaccid, milquetoast wimps by progressives and the second coming of the Third Reich by the teabaggers? That’s what Obama’s efforts at “bipartisanship” have wrought. It’s time to drop that fantasy and start articulating a clear vision. Judging from what I’ve heard about the State of the Union address, however, I think we’re in for more mush.

THE TOM THE DANCING BUG HAITIAN RELIEF CHALLENGE

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 by Ruben Bolling

I see that George Clooney took my idea and set up his own little fundraising operation which apparently raised a few bucks.  That's cool; all's fair in the humanitarian relief game.  But in case you've recently decided to give, why not give through this Challenge?

All donors become official Friends of Tom the Dancing Bug, and you get a chance at winning original Tom the Dancing Bug artwork, created specially for you (the donation level is high, but it's made up of smaller donations, so right now the leading levels of donation are quite affordable).

And even if you don't make a donation, you can still help mightily by publicizing this Challenge on your blog, social networking page, twitter account, or bowling league newsletter.  This small gesture could raise a lot of funds for Haiti by bringing this Challenge to the attention of someone might be willing to make a donation.

Most of all, THANKS to all the Friends of Tom the Dancing Bug who have already participated, and to those who helped publicize participation!
