African-American Classics: Graphic Classics Vol. #22 is out NOW.

Get it and check out pages 108 & 109 first. Then read the rest of the book, filled with adapted stories and poems by comic luminaries including Lance Tooks, Kyle Baker, Alex Simmons, and Shephard Hendrix. Let the awesomeness permeate your brainmeat for approximately 20 minutes after book reading is complete. Feel free to weep openly with joy, but try to keep your clothes on.
[singlepic id=58 w=320 h=240 float=center]

When your joy tears have dried and your pants are rebuckled, read Volume 22 again. WITH FERVOR! However this time pages 108 & 109 should be read last and in a booming theatrical voice with lots of hand gestures. Also it’s recommended that you orate it standing up and marching in a circle (or in the shape of your choosing).
[singlepic id=64 w=320 h=240 float=center]

Repeat the process, only this time read every third word in every third panel. Who knows? You might find a secret message hidden inside!

So sadly, I won’t be able to attend SPX this year after all–the baby (well, rampaging toddler) has recently rebelled against all forms of travel longer than a short subway ride, and insists on running around in circles dancing and screaming loudly at all times…

But Masheka and some of my Cartoonists With Attitude friends will be there. And Masheka has a sneak preview of his latest comic. Here’s the scoop:

First, have a sneak peek at the first panel of my adaptation of ‘De Cunjah Man’ in African-American Classics: Graphic Classics Vol. 22 on sale December 2011.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ON35o7gLfXI/Tmoey0vIqLI/AAAAAAAABEA/dcj0VvPqjUc/s400/58__320x240_mashekawood_decunjahmanwebpreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5650362540988344498" />

Aaaaaaaand this weekend, September 10 & 11 in Bethesda, MD, I’ll be at the 2011 Small Press Expo peddling books with Jen Sorensen and hanging out with Keith Knight and other cartoonist pals.

Unfortunately my better half, Mikhaela Reid, can’t make it this year, so this will be my first convention without a buffer between my many neuroses and the public at large. Me nervous! Hope ya like sweaty handshakes and mumblecore!

Check out my version (top) of Gil Kane’s cover to Sensation Comics #109. The original art and a color print are on exhibit (and for sale) at Headspace Gallery in Michigan’s Green Brain Comics (see press release below)

—–

Green Brain Comics is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit entitled COVERED on Wednesday, January 13th in the recently named HEADSPACE Gallery inside Green Brain Comics.

Inspired by a similar theme at the Covered blog (www.covered.blogspot.com) HEADSPACE curator Dan Merritt has assembled several pieces by artists that have brought their own touch to famous, and infamous comic book covers from several different decades.

“The theme for this exhibit has really sparked a creative flame.” says Merritt “Each of these pieces has been lovingly recreated in tribute to the original art and the original artists that created them.”

Featured in the exhibit will be works from Michigan based comic creators Paul Sizer, Matt Feazell, and Sean Bieri. Joining them will be other well known local artists Eric Millikin, Jennifer Rose Evans, and Chris Houghton. The Covered exhibit also features new work by many others, including Bryan Durren, Heather Hansma, Lizz James, Jesse Hughes and a piece by Masheka Wood from New York.

The opening reception for the Covered exhibit will be on Wednesday January 13th from 7pm to 10 pm. And the art will be on view until Saturday March 6th.

HEADSPACE Gallery is inside Green Brain Comics which is located at 13210 Michigan Avenue in East Downtown Dearborn. More information is available at www.greenbrain.biz or by calling 313-582-9444

Fortunately, several cool-ass folks who worked at that branch formed a new organization; and with the help of the MSPCA, which granted a free lease to the location they were forced to abandon, the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts (APCSM) is ready to pick up the slack.

But, they need your help. They are entirely separate from the MSPCA and don’t have access to its fundraising operation. To keep the shelter open, they’ve held bake sales, yard sales, and are about to throw a kick-ass Paws in the Park event in Easton, MA. If you can’t make it to any of those things, you can also make online donations!

My sister has been working at this shelter for years, and she’s part of the group that’s trying to keep it going. She does great work, and I can guarantee you that every (tax deductible!) dollar donated will go towards helping the most adorable animals EVER!

So please, donate now, southeastern Massachusetts’ animals need your help. For every BFW fan that donates, I’ll draw a bonus comic featuring rescue animals doing hilarious things and post it here on the blog. Send me an email after you donate to make sure I know about it.
