*SPX/BETHESDA WRAP-UP...
Woo-haa! Another show in the can. Best SPX ever!! A very rare occasion in which just about all my contemporaries in the indie newspaper political cartooning field were present. Tom Tomorrow, Ruben Bolling, Jen Sorenson, Ted Rall, Mikhaela Reid, Derf, Stephanie McMillan, Lloyd Dangle, Ted Rall, August J Pollak and more were on hand for a weekend of comics, panels, food and drink at the finest Small Press convention in the free world.

The weekend started off with a trip to the Library of Congress, set up by comics historian/all-around good chum Warren Bernard. He got us a special tour that took us behind closed doors to see originals by Thomas Nast, Ollie Harrington and Barbara Brandon-Croft. Also, some drawings from the Civil War. Amazing stuff.

We then took in a Tom Tomorrow slide show at the fine D.C. bookstore Politics and Prose, which followed a presentation by none other than the incredible Lynda Barry.

I've always wanted to meet Ms Barry, but circumstances always made me just miss her. The line was so long on Friday that I almost missed her again. But we got to meet her and she said the nicest things about my work. It was a pleasure to meet her and my inflated head bumped the top of the doorway on the way out of there.

Saturday at SPX was gangbusters. The place was packed and sales were brisk. I realized early on that I could've brought more Complete K Chronicles books. Oh well.

I also got to meet Richard Thompson, the man behind the fine daily comic strip Cul de Sac. He had nice things to say about the Knight Life, and I was glad to hear it. Cranking out the daily is a grind, so it's nice to hear some good feedback once in a while.

That night, most of the Cartoonists with Attitude crew went out for dinner and drinks. Hitting the Ignatz after-party for some free beer and whipped cream. Congrats to Laura Park for her win. She's gonna be a star.

SPX on Sunday found me selling out of some of the books. Both (th)ink book and the Completes. I also sat on a panel about cartooning the election with Ruben, Mikhaela, and Jen. Shout-out to my Aunt Yvonne, who showed up during the discussion.

The day ended with me hunched over a computer in Kinko's, feverishly trying to finish my dailies for print so I can catch the last innings of the Sox game. I was there for HOURS. But I got back to the closing hotel bar to see the Angels win in extra innings.

But the Sox would get their revenge the next day. Sorry, Rob Goodin.

Thank you, SPX. For finally switching to Saturday and Sunday, instead of Friday-Saturday. It is a better show because of it.

And thanks to Warren, proprietor of Chez Bernard, the official hotel of the Cartoonists With Attitude.

*I'M OFF TO SPX 2008 THIS WEEKEND...
..in Bethesda, Maryland. I will be hanging with the Usual Gang of Idiots, including Ted Rall, Jen Sorenson, Mikhaela Reid, Masheka Wood and Ruben Bolling. Look for us on the floor clustered as the Cartoonists with Attitude.

*WEST HOLLYWOOD BOOKFAIR WRAP-UP...
Had a jolly time at my 2nd WeHo book fair, mainly because they have a wondrous stash of free eats in the green room. But also because my booth was right next to where 70's hot mama Adrienne Barbeau was signing her latest tome (she looked spectacular, by the way).

The weirdest thing that happened was I was walking back out to the car to get more books and somebody who was campaigning for McCain/Palin was walking toward me and bumped into me..and the American flag that was sticking out of their shirt pocket stabbed me in the heart!!

Oh, the irony.

*GREETINGS FROM THE WORLD'S WORST BLOGGER....
Ugh..I oughta be ashamed of myself. I don't deserve a blog. I don't deserve readers.

Anyhoo. Here was my past week:

*826LA FUNDRAISING PARTY..
..was at the Venice location. Which made it easy for me to hop a bus and head over there. T'was a nice event that featured Dave Eggers, Spike Jonze and new LA director Joel Arquillos making the pitch to a whole bunch of creative folk. Meg Ryan was there. I told her to sit down.

826LA is always looking for volunteers and donations, at either the Venice or Echo Park locations. Feel free to contact them through their website: http://www826la.org. Tell 'em Keef sent ya.

*I TOOK MY ARSE TO SAN FRANCISCO..
..for a number of events, including the opening of my glorious exhibition at the Cartoon Art Museum!! The exhibit looks great, with over 40 pieces gracing the walls. It includes high school and college work. And ends with originals of my new daily comic strip, Knight Life.

I got some decent press for the event, including a nice write-up in one of the local alt-weeklies, the Bay Guardian. Unfortunately, at the same time of my event, Lynda Barry was doing something at the Booksmith, and ultra-fab editorial cartoonist Khalil Bendib was doing the Commonwealth Club!! Three cartoonist events at the same time!!

So the attendance at my event was sorta spotty, but sales were good. I did a bit of a walk-thru for the crowd, commenting on various pieces. Shout outs to SF cartoonists Paul Madonna and Lev Yilmaz for showing up.

In addition, I spoke at the Oakland campus of California College of the Arts and did an interview for KPFA's Hard Knock radio. Made a surprise guest appearance at Stephen Elliott's Progressive Reading Series and partied at another opening for a smaller exhibit of my work at the City Center hostel in downtown San Francisco.

I must say thanks to the woman from Massachusetts who showed up to the hostel event after reading about it on my blog. I didn't think anyone read this thing. I wish I wasn't so new-parent tired, I would've given her a donut or something. Thank you for coming out.

The weekend ended with my "Cartoons are Serious Business" lecture on Sunday. I was asked whether I 'd ever do a class that was more about drawing cartoons...I think I will do that for the next one.

*TOTORO FOREST PROJECT..
An exhibit that just went up in the gallery next to mine at the C.A.M. is this amazing show that features art from the Totoro Forest Project Charity Auction. All of the art was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's animated film My Neighbor Totoro. And it was all auctioned off at the Pixar Animation Studios earlier this month. Proceeds from the auction go to save Japan's Sayama Forest, the forest in which Miyazaki's film is based on.

My buddy Chris bid and won the piece that features 4 frames on the wall that faces my exhibit. Defintely check this show out. It's the cat's bottom!!

*DID I MENTION THE PIECE I DID FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION..
..about the dwindling black population in San Francisco? Check it out by going here and finding my name.

*MY "IF PALIN WERE A DEMOCRAT/BLACK DEMOCRAT CARTOONS ARE POPPING UP EVERYWHERE..
Nice to see them getting around. And to see the right-wing trolls that lurk the internet to place feedback and commentary anywhere they can put it. I hope they're paid well.

Makes me wonder: If anyone or any company performed as bad as this administration did in these past eight years, you'd never want to hire them again, right? You'd punish them so they'd change it up and come back with better service, a better product.

Yet, there are still folks out there willing to vote for the Republican ticket.

Honestly, folks. If the Republicans win, they'll know that they never, ever have to do anything for the American people, EVER. They could nominate two piles of Moose dung, and as long as all the right-wing talking heads push em, they'll have no problem getting elected.

Political video of the weak.

*LETTERS/EMAILS OF THE WEEK..

I've been enjoying your stuff for a long while. To me, your forerunner was Warren
Hutcherson, who claimed his father was a state policeman, black muslim--and whenever he
the son was stopped by a trooper, they said he had enough crap in his life and waved him
on. He said his father would show him examples of racism all over the place--green olives
were in glass containers but black ones were kept in metal cans, symbolic, he implied, of
the black man's being kept in jail.
Please understand that in the sixties and seventies, and still now, I was on picket lines
all over. I don't know if you saw it, but a short while ago the local rag ran a piece on
people in Haiti were literally eating pies made from a pale mud--and selling them to
other people as some sort of nutrition. I was in the lobby of my building and expressed
shock at what I was reading. The mailman said, and another tenant expressed good-humored
agreement, that if "they" didn't have seven children, maybe they could afford food. I lit
into them (mud to eat is the result of 400 years, etc.), but the way things are going,
people just kind of shut up--declining king's gambit, perhaps.
Anyway, thanks again for all your good work--especially liked the drug-shit correlation
in current issue. Incidentally, Burlington uses our lovely Lake Champlain as a toilet and
for filtering it to drink. Screw Orange County. Give credit where due.
By the way, I'm in (theoretically) the last stages of writing an existential novel about
the Brooklyn Dodgers of 1950--and reappearing today.

Best to your family.

BEST. KCHRONICLES. EVER. (or at least tied for first with the one about trying to get good pizza and cheese steaks in San Francisco vs. Boston)

Take a bow, sir. Great work.

Loved today's "Knight Life" about vet mentoring.

I'm a veteran myself. A few years ago I was at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City and I was shocked to learn that a lot of the other vets in the hospital with me were homeless and that after they were discharged they were either going to homeless shelters or just back on the street. I did some research and learned, at the time, that 20% of all homeless people in the US were veterans. That number has risen to 25%. It's tragic. For all the talk from the Bush administration about "supporting our troops," it pisses me off that veterans just don't matter to them. The government makes a big show about raising the budget for the VA every year but then after the fiscal year gets started, the president calls the secretary of veterans affairs and says, "you need to cut your spending so we can pay for the war." It seems that in this country, we like our heroes in only two forms: In a uniform or in a grave. Anyone else is just a veteran and they don't count.

Keep up the great work.

Keith and Kerstin,
Nice work! Gravy’s happy face adorns our refrigerator.

As you may know, for us humans, not every act of copulation produces a life. Countless couples have mastered the fine art of coitus, but to no reproductive avail. Naturally, whenever a baby is born, most of the credit goes to the woman. Often, people don’t keep in mind that the most important part of successful procreation is a strong swimming sperm. Without the tiny sperm’s tenacity, his tireless determination to swim, swim, swim upstream like a salmon, none of us would be blessed with the awesome gift of life. Here, the credit goes to Keith, and all his paternal, sperm-producing ancestors who gave rise to the Knight family line, which Gravy will one day proudly carry on, with his own strong swimming sperm.

Love,
S.

*BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD OF ME..

*EMAILS/LETTERS OF THE WEEK...

Keef, my good brother:

I want to share something with you.

In June I had cancer surgery. And in those beginning days of my recovery, one of the things that gave me comfort and helped me to relax, was your latest book, "I Left My Arse in San Francisco."
Your delightful (if warped) sense of humor helped pull me through the fog of medication and pain. And while I have always enjoyed your work, this was something special.

Thanks, my brother. And by the way, I'm feeling stronger every day.

Peace,

W.

Hi Keef,

I just came back from a conference in San Diego - Optics & Photonics,
not comics - so I was in SoCal too. I had the best possible reading
material on the long flight from Toronto: The Complete K Chronicles!
Man, what a hefty volume! It's a testament to my appreciation for your
art that I trucked that brick all the way there and back. All these
pages for under $25 is the best value you can get (although I didn't
remember that you had such a thing for Canada; glad you changed your
opinion).

Now for the Little Victory that goes with it:

I was in my comic book shop, despondent over the small haul of my
regular monthlies...when my eyes fell upon The Complete K Chronicles!
(YES!!!)

[...]

I just checked that you hadn't done it yet - I seemed to remember
something - and found that it is somewhat similar to #6174 from 18 June
2008. Oh well. I still wanted to convey my appreciation and
encouragement.

Here's another one that happened on this trip:

I got to the San Diego Airport early yesterday and managed to take an
earlier flight to San Francisco (Yes!), which enabled me get a further
earlier transfer to Toronto, thereby getting home several hours earlier
(double YES!!!), in time to catch Michael Phelps' 7th medal swim (triple
YES!!!).

Tough to cram into two panels, but I enjoyed living it.

Keep it up!

which you're both going)

Nicely done.

p.s. Is there any way that this evil Canadian can become an American citizen (like, real
quick) - *JUST* so I can vote for Barack in the next election - preferably in a red

Hi, Keef---
Attached, in Word, is my "review" of (or reaction to) your new strip. "Best thing since Calvin and Hobbes," I say.

*EMAIL/LETTERS OF THE WEEK...

re: Star Wars strip-

(Holding up a beer) Here's to you, guy.

That was one of the funner bits I've seen in a while. (Especially the
gentle kick-in-the-knee to the one guy in Hollywood who would laugh with
you, which would be Kevin Smith.)
I assume you've avoided the new cartoon movie, too.

-Jeff // San Francisco

My younger daughter turned 16 yesterday; my older daughter is leaving home
day-after-tomorrow. We've been in a record heat wave. I shopped ahead. I started
baking before the heat of the day. Two layers, each sliced in two, filled, frosted and
chilled in a struggling dripping fridge. It is time to celebrate. I remember:
Candles!@#$? I look in the cupboard... and find two new packages, untouched, pearly
white, two packs of eight!

Keith, I'm sure you can reduce this to something universal. In case it is not clear,
I'll tell you that yesterday this seemed a MAJOR victory! Thank you for your work, your
art, your expression of our fears and reminder of our joys.

Miriam (in Portland, Oregon)

Hey Keith, I've been meaning to drop you a line for a while now. my
girlfriend (now wife) bought me one of your books 3 years ago and I've
been hooked ever since. she's from san fran I'm from utah we met in
new england and are now living in DC. we got a lot of strange looks as
an interracial couple but now that we're married, people actually
look at us and smile. love the strip, I have them all now and love the
band. anything new on the horizon?

at a recent game with a topic of famous people i tried
to depict you, unsuccessfully. The new in-laws said it wasn't fair
because you weren't famous . I beg to differ, in my world your very
famous. keep up the good work and if your ever in DC look me up.

R.
--------
Hey Keith,

I am one of those old comic strip lovers. I have every
Trudeau/Doonesbury book and a hundred more from people like Addams and
Bizarro. I find the humor lifts the day and like your stuff gets me to
laugh and think at the same time but not necessarily in that order.

What got me to write was the "Hi-lingual" strip. As the T&D director of
a truly multi-national company and having to deal with the world
population every day, I love that strip and would love to share it with
some of my colleagues.

Should you find yourself in the Seattle area and need a tour guide, me
and the Mrs. would love to play host but in the meantime, keep on
cranking out the good stuff and hope the Seattle PI will keep your strip
running.

Cheers,

L.

*LOOKING FOR SF FOLKS TO POST FLIERS..
I've got posters for my three events happening in San Francisco in September. I need some good folk to post some around town. If you're into it, send me your address (keef@kchronicles.com), and I'll mail these suckas out to you.

*EXTRA!! EXTRA!! ADDITIONAL EVENT IN SAN FRANCISCO!!
I just found out that the hostel organization that I used to work for is having their own Keith Knight Hostel Comic Art Exhibition!!

If you've been reading the K Chronicles over the years, you know that I used to work at a San Francisco Youth Hostel. I've drawn more than a few strips about my adventures there.

Now my old co-worker, Greg H., has organized an exhibit in my honor!! Nice!!

The opening is happening on Saturday, sEpt. 20th, from 7pm-9pm. There'll be wine and cheese and moi (and a lot of confused hostellers).

The hostel is located at 685 Ellis St. near Larkin. (note: this is one of the sister hostels to the one I used to work at).

*THE BEST THING I GOT FROM THE SAN DIEGO COMIC CON..
..was a comic book called "Pug Davis", by Rebecca Davis. It's about a guy who was a janitor, but now has a giant dog head and flies around the universe kicking ass with his homosexual sidekick. Nutty stuff. Check out Rebecca's website at www.sugarboukas.com.

And, of course, the new Bob the Angry Flower Book.

*FOR EVERYONE WHO WAS WONDERING WHEN I'D BE TEACHING THAT CARTOONING SEMINAR AGAIN...

Cartoons Are Serious Business:
A Cartooning Workshop with Keith Knight,
Creator of the ?K¹ Chronicles, (th)ink and the Knight Life

Cartoon Art Museum Class: Sunday, September 21, 2008, 1:00 - 4:00pm
Cost per class: $100; $90 for CAM members

On Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Cartoon Art Museum is offering another
installment in its ongoing series of workshops for aspiring comic artists,
writers and fans of all ages. Each class is taught by a professional
cartoonist focusing on an area of his or her expertise, ranging from
character creation and story development to writing and drawing comic books
and strips.

Keith Knight, 2007 Harvey Award winner and creator of the syndicated comics
the 'K' Chronicles, the Knight Life and (th)ink, will conduct an intensive
three-hour workshop for aspiring cartoonists, entitled Cartoons Are Serious
Business. The cost of this class is $100 per student for the general
public, and $90 per student for members of the Cartoon Art Museum.

Mr. Knight will be drawing upon his 15 years as a self-syndicated cartoonist
for this intensive workshop, which is an advanced class for people looking
to make cartooning a viable money-making career. This workshop will focus
on the business side of comics, from marketing and promotions to dealing
with syndicates and negotiating publishing contracts. In the past decade,
Knight's work has appeared in self-published 'zines, major newspapers,
alternative newsweeklies, professional comic anthologies and major
nationally-distributed publications including ESPN: The Magazine and Mad,
he has promoted his work at more than 100 comic conventions and trade shows,
and he has delivered lectures on cartooning at colleges and universities
throughout the United States.

This is an encore presentation of a class Knight taught at the Cartoon Art
Museum in 2006. Since then, he has launched a daily comic strip with King
Features Syndicate, won numerous awards and signed a deal to produce a
200-page graphic novel. He has a lot more stuff to tell people.

Keith Knight is a Boston-born, Los Angeles-based cartoonist whose three
syndicated comics, the 'K 'Chronicles, the Knight Life and (th)ink, can be
found in newspapers, magazines and websites all across the country. He is
also a rapper with the semi-conscious hip-hop group, the Marginal Prophets.
For more information, please visit his website, www.kchronicles.com
<http://www.kchronicles.com>

Class size is limited, and each class is filled on a first-come,
first-served basis. Basic drawing materials will be provided, but students
are encouraged to purchase sketchbooks and their own drawing implements. To
register or for more information about the workshop, please contact Diane
Shapiro Sommerfield at (415) CAR-TOON, ext. 303, or via e-mail at
education@cartoonart.org.
