ANOTHER LETTER CONCERNING THE CONTROVERSY....

The events of the Monday newspaper controversy made me sad to discover on
Tuesday the depth of the accident that the Daily Wildcat perpetuated. In
particular, I am ashamed to find that it was an accident and not a bold push by
the Daily Wildcat staff in order to bring such issues to the forefront through
what, effectively, is a clever editorial comic. So now, I find myself writing
this letter as a statement to Mr. Knight and the Daily Wildcat readers.

I'll make a first level assumption that those readers that were greatly offended
by the truncated use of this derogatory term are also completely offended by the
use of the term in rap culture on a near constant level. I will also assume that
they are offended by the use of the term itself. I have not seen a single letter
taking offense at the generalization of white American voters being labeled as
racists even when voting for Obama. I certainly don't take offense, as it is
necessary to get the point across.

What Mr. Knight does, and I applaud him for, is bring out the fact that
President-elect Obama reached across even the still existent racist divide. It
is only natural that in order to fully point out the existence of such racism,
that a term would need to be used. Without the use of a derogatory term, the
point of the entire comic is lost. If offended for the use of a term, I ask for
a look at who the audience is. The audience for the Daily Wildcat is students
and alumni who should be capable of intelligent thought on such a subject.
Instead of being immediately offended by the use of a word, I would have
expected many of you to sit and THINK on the point of the comic. Instead, all I
see is outrage at the usage of a word, as opposed to congratulations to Mr.
Knight for his portrayal of a message.

If the Daily Wildcat had printed this intentionally, I would be congratulating
them as well - for their denial of censorship that has started to become so
commonplace in the media. The real world isn't perfectly nice and politically
correct. I'm sure Mr. Knight is well aware of that fact when he brings the
message of his comic to us. I hope that there is never a day when the papers of
the country try to hide our people from every harsh word and every inconvenient
truth. I hope, in the future, that such comics are bold pushes towards bringing
issues to a forefront, as opposed to accidents.

*FINALLY, WE CAN EXHALE..
Wow. We finally get to experience a positive piece of American history again. It's about time.
I just wish some of the elders in my fam lived long enough to see a black man elected president.

I figured it would happen in my lifetime, but not this soon.

I asked older family members, and they thought they'd never live to see it.

The strips I did this week were assuming Obama would get in, just like what Garry Trudeau did with Doonesbury. I had only one editor ask,"What if he doesn't win?".

And what a joy it was seeing the likes of Jesse Jackson with tears in his eyes.

I coulda watched images of black folks crying all night long ( I also enjoy watching Extreme Home Makeover much more when they have black folks on it, cuz we faint and cry and scream like nobody else).

Bravo, America. We took a big step forward in restoring our reputation in the world.

*THE CONTROVERSY BREWS ON..

The Montclarion brouhaha continues to grow, with a ton of discussions going on about it on the web. Below are some of the choice ones.

http://ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com/

http://www.baristanet.com/

http://dailycartoonist.com/

Here is an interview I did today.

I'm also throwing in some letters/emails of the week concerning said brouhaha:

Mr. Knight,
My name is J. and I am a junior at Montclair State University. I am also the Assistant Sports Editor of The Montclarion. As you know by now, a comic you created has sparked a big controversy on the campus here. When I first saw the comic, I was very upset.
You see, I come from a family where it does not matter your color, ethnicity, creed, sex, etc. When I was little, my first best friend was black. When I moved to a pretty white suburb, I heard the jokes about other races and it offended me, even though I am white, that is just the type of person I am. In high school, when more black students moved to town, I had to leave school early one day because the white kids were going to beat me up because they were calling my friends a nasty name and I told them, starting a semi-clash.
I got it all through high school; because I dress a certain way, listen to a certain type of music, I was called names so nasty and heard people say the nastiest things, you would just wonder "Why do they think like that?".
I'm not going to pretend I know what it feels like to be a black person in America. But seeing my friends go through it everyday, hanging out in the city of Newark, a heavily populated black city, I see it. And again, I don't know how it feels, but I do get offended. It would not have mattered if it was about an Hispanic person, an Asian person, a Middle Eastern person; it still would have offended me.
But, on the other hand, I do get what you were saying. It was based off a real-life event and it took a professor in the Broadcasting Department, the Department I am majoring in, to explain that even though these people are ignorant and racist, they still see Obama is the best choice no matter his skin color.
I was going to quit the newspaper yesterday after I saw that comic. I just think that the word is nasty, and it holds a lot of bad weight. I feel that if people on my campus heard your side, they might understand it a little more. Also, this isn't even a black/white thing because I have dealt with more white people coming into the office or talking about how offended they were.
I know I have written a lot and I do not want to take up anymore of your time. I just wanted to let you know how I felt and I also want you to continue doing what your doing because what you are doing is educating Mr. Knight, though to some on my campus it does not seem like that. I hope to hear back. Thank you again.

Sincerely,
J.

Your shit sucks. It's sad to see someone with no future like yourself going so low that you have nothing better to do than right racist comics, (which suck). You must have no life goals if this is all you do. I hope you enter the 21st century someday. I know i am not the first to send something to your racist self, but i hope i just wasted some more of your worthless time.

Again, below the Obama infomercial posts, is my official statement to various media outlets.

*THE CONTROVERSY BREWS ON...

Here is my "official statement" that I gave to the Montclarion school paper, Politico.com and some newscast that contacted me.

To Whom it May Concern,

First off, it's nice to know people are still reading the paper.

In all seriousness, the strip is based on some true incidents that happened to canvassers in some battleground states.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/on-road-western-pennsylvania.html

Is it offensive? Yes. Is it sad? Sure. But that's the reality of the United States and this very unique election.

We have the first African-American candidate for president who could actually win. And folks of all colors are coming face-to-face with bias and race issues they didn't know about, have ignored or pretended didn't exist. Neighbors, co-workers, and family members are learning a little more about the society we live in.

The comic is pointing out one aspect of it. Straight-up racists are prepared to pull the lever for a black man. While some folks out there, who never thought they were prejudiced, aren't going to vote for him because of his skin color.

Should we ignore stuff like this? I don't think so.

Should it be in a comic strip? Yes!!

Comic strips aren't always "ha-ha" funny. They can be peculiar or strange or dark or embarrassing. Some of the most effective cartooning addresses serious issues. I suppose there are still a lot of folks who think comics should all be like "Garfield".

I think it's good that people are discussing the strip, whether it be negative or positive. It shows that they care and are willing to confront issues that are often swept under the rug.

This election is the most significant event to happen concerning race in this country since the civil rights movement. It has shown us what makes this country great, and what we still need to work on. I like to think my work shines a light on both the negative and the positive.

If given the opportunity, I would love to do a slide-show on campus about cartooning, politics, race and the media. It would be nice to talk to the readers in person.

Cheers,

*AND, OUT OF ALL THE FEEDBACK I'VE READ ABOUT THE STRIP, THIS PERSON GOT WHAT I WAS TRYING TO CONVEY:

"For better or worse, it's a word with a lot of power. There are those who attempt to strip it of its power by using it casually or artistically. Here I think the power of the word is harnessed to make a thoughtful and worthwhile point about the way people are voting in this election. I have encountered people who I would consider racist who are voting for Obama in a strangely promising and simultaneously troubling phenomenon."

*POST OBAMA INFOMERCIAL..
Forget everything I said in that earlier post. The infomercial was right on target. Obama done did it and done did it well. Can you imagine Bush or McCain doing something like that?

Now it's America vs. Election Fraud. Who will win?

*OBAMA INFOMERCIAL...
Does anyone besides me have a bad feeling about this? No one wants to watch half-hour infomercials about anything. Especially in prime-time. And it's on numerous channels..It's like Big Brother -type stuff.

And forcing a World Series game to air a half-hour later is bad news, too.

This is like the Obama seal they introduced a coupla months back that quickly disappeared.

Man..I wish someone could talk the Obama team out of doing this. They should just continue campaigning hard...

*GLORY BE!! A FULL-BLOWN KEITH KNIGHT CARTOON CONTROVERSY!!
Whoa!! Turn out the strip I did a week ago ("Stories from the Campaign Trail") has sparked protests and calls for an editor's head on a platter at a college in New Jersey. You can read the news story here.

Fun Fact: The strip is based on a real incident.

I just got an email from said editor, asking me if I want to respond. I will be sending back a statement over the next coupla daze.

Interesting. Cuz I haven't heard from anywhere else.

But it's nice to know I'm in New Jersey. I keep asking the college syndication service where my strip's running, and I never get an answer. I now know of one place where it runs.

They should bring me out there for a slideshow!!

*APE IN SAN FRANCISCO THIS WEEKEND...
I hope you'll join me, Stephen Notley and a whole bunch more of the most exciting indie comic creators in the U.S. of A., for the West Coast's biggest event of its kind: the Alternative Press Expo.

I'll be right up front as usual in my Halloween costume, cooking up fresh comics for you. Along with books, original cartoon art, bags and oh-so-much more.

Go here for the pertinent details.

My 4th graders are inventing a sort of "pay it forward" semi-altruistic, (inspired by Obama) community activist type project..whereby we try to connect languishing state-stored bucks with rightful owners in nearby low-income neighborhoods. To make it more fun we're also data base searching cartoonists by name & see if they might have $$ coming to them too. Which is why I'm writing you. You're one of our first test cases. Please let us know if it helps you out. We're big fans of your cartoons.

Take care.

(Unfortunately, none of these Keith's are me (or my Dad!). But mebbe these another Keef out there who happens upon this post and makes some $$$!!-kk)

My Life's Little Victory:

You page through a recent edition of Funny Times with increasing despondence because it looks like this month they've left out The K Chronicles....

...only to find it on the very last page twice normal size AND in color!

It's always the very first thing I look for when my Funny Times arrives. You should be in every paper in the country. Keep up the good work!

Keef,

I've been reading your work on Salon.com for years now and have to say your
recent string of new parent/LA life comics are top notch. This weeks
especially. Keep it up, man. You're on a roll. The look on your face while
you take pennies had me laughing out loud.

Any plans to start selling stuff with your strip The Knight Life on
comics.com? I would kill for the Obama/Phelps silhouette comic from Tuesday
on a mug.

Hey,
Just a quick note... finally got caught up on the strip. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the last week or so, especially the alphabet "k" ones and the Phelps/obama one. To me, your best Knight Life yet. Kudos!
